 “We are in favor of memorializing all veterans who serve, but not all veterans are Christian,” said Debbie Allen, president of the San Diego chapter of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State. “The moneys of all taxpayers, believers and nonbelievers alike, are used inappropriately to maintain this cross on this piece of land.”

Marine Widow Fights To Keep Camp Pendleton Cross Up

A Marine widow has joined the fight to keep a cross at Camp Pendleton, saying it is the only place she can mourn the loss of her husband, who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

In November, Elena Zurheide and her son Robert were among a small group who made the trek up Camp Horno at Camp Pendleton to help put up a giant 400-pound cross.

"The purpose of the banners is to highlight the fact that atheists are everywhere, in every parade, on every beach, and in every state, city, and town," said Dave Silverman, President of American Atheists. "Atheism is alive and growing in the U.S. "
